🐾 From Café to Storytime: How a Capybara Café Inspired a New TJKidz Story

🐾 From Café to Storytime: How a Capybara Café Inspired a New TJKidz Story

Every once in a while, real life hands you a moment so unexpected, so adorable, and so creatively chaotic… that it ends up becoming a story. Or in my case, two stories.

During a recent family trip to St. Augustine, my wife surprised us with something I didn’t even know existed — a capybara café. Yes, you read that right. A place where you can sit, relax, and hang out with capybaras and other exotic animals. And let me tell you… it was unforgettable.

We met a porcupine, an armadillo, a possum, and of course, the main event: the capybaras. These gentle giants were calm, curious, and so ridiculously cute that you can’t help but smile the entire time you’re around them.

And here’s the funny part…

In real life, every kid in that café was perfectly behaved. Kind, gentle, patient — exactly the way you hope kids will be around animals. But as a storyteller? Well… I needed a little chaos. So in my story, I added a few wild kids who don’t listen, who poke and prod and make Latte (our capybara hero) want to escape to the wild. It’s the kind of exaggeration that makes a story fun, but the real café was nothing like that — thankfully!

But the inspiration didn’t stop there.

At the end of our visit, my daughter picked out a stuffed capybara from the gift shop. We didn’t mind one bit — all proceeds go to the Noah’s Ark Preserve, which cares for the animals. She hugged it tight, looked up at me, and said, “I’m naming him Latte.”

And just like that, the main character of Latte the Capybara was born.

What I didn’t expect was that this same Florida vacation would also spark an idea for another story — Gnome (Ganomee) the Gnome Meets the Homophone Gnome. If you’ve listened closely, you might’ve noticed a little cameo in that episode: the red‑roofed buildings and the mention of St. Augustine. Yep… straight from this Florida trip. It’s funny how inspiration sneaks up on you when you’re not looking.

So this one café visit gave me:

• A new character

• A new story

• A new memory with my daughter

Not bad for one afternoon with a bunch of giant, fuzzy potatoes.

And if you haven’t listened yet, Latte the Capybara will be available this Thursday on Apple, Spotify, or your favorite podcast app — a sweet, funny, heartwarming tale inspired by a real moment I’ll never forget.

Sometimes imagination becomes reality… and sometimes reality inspires imagination.
